The Advanced Nutrition From the Superfoods

There is a class of foods that are considered to be “superfoods” because of the advanced nutrition that they offer. Everyone knows that some foods are better than others, for example, an apple is more nutritious than a potato chip, and broccoli trumps gummy bears. The fact is that there are some foods that can help us to live longer, healthier and more vibrant lives.

Superfoods have a high concentration of critical nutrients as well as typically being low in calories. Many of these nutrients have been proven to be helpful in the prevention of disease, and to reverse the effects of aging. Eating a diet that is rich in the vital nutrients that is found in these foods can help prevent cardiovascular disease, type II Diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers and Alzheimer’s disease

Most of these extremely nutritious foods boast a variety of antioxidants, phytonutrients, polyphenols, omega fatty acids, and more. The majority of them are found whole in nature with little processing. They are complex and they contain hundreds of yet to be identified compounds and nutrients.

A growing body of research suggests that the nutrients from food work best in concert with each other. That is why it is best to eat a combination of healthy foods rather than focus on just a few. Nutrients from a wide range of foods work together to promote good health and to prevent the problems of aging.

The ORAC scale or the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity measures the antioxidant capacity of a food; this is a measurement of how well the antioxidants contained within the food were able to stabilize oxygen free radicals in a test tube. The higher the ORAC number the higher the antioxidant capacity of the food.

Many foods score high on the ORAC scale but the food that scores the highest is the acai berry from the rainforests of Brazil. The little berry is loaded with antioxidants, polyphenols, essential fatty omega acids and even a full range of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein.

Other foods that are considered to be superfoods, include all of the berries, including blueberries and cranberries, spinach and other greens, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, wild salmon, walnuts and other nuts and even tea and dark chocolate.

Eating a healthy and balanced diet that includes the superior nutrition of the healthiest foods on earth is probably the very best way in the world to remain healthy and strong, and to ward of disease as we age.
